Have We Met Before? Costumes and Role Play

Halloween is right around the corner. It’s the one time during the year adults can dress up as their favorite character and pretend to be someone they are not. But why does it only have to be around Halloween? Why not take that costume and that fantasy and use it in the bedroom? Dressing up and role-playing is a great way to add variety and some extra fun in the bedroom. It can in many ways bring a couple closer together and strengthen their bond.

Incorporating costumes and role play can allow us to incorporate things that we may be too shy to ask our partner to do, like being spanked or being restrained. Sometimes it can be difficult to say outright that we want to try something that we haven’t shown interest in before. When you start to discuss the various scenes that you want to try it allows for the opportunity to tell our partner that there are other things we want to add to that particular play time. Then if it shouldn’t work out that it is something you like it can just as easily be forgotten about and that particular scene can be played out again without it. Perhaps you are interested in exploring a rougher side of sex (hair pulling, forcefully pushed around, being grabbed under the chin), but have been hesitant on how to approach the subject with your partner. Try making the suggestion of putting it into a role-playing session, for instance where one of you is the aggressive boss and the other the quiet employee. Tell your partner that when they play the part as the aggressive boss you would like to try out things that are rougher; maybe being pinned to the desk or the wall while they feel at your body. If that is something you like to do and are comfortable with, then discuss the possibility of doing it without the role-playing. Dressing up and role-playing can help open the doors to more communication about desires that have not been expressed yet.

Now, before the excuses start about how you can’t act or you will feel foolish pretending to be someone else in a sexual manner, try not to think of it as anything other than adding to foreplay. It’s part of the warm-up session leading up to sex.  You are merely signaling to your partner that you’re interested in something extra that night. It helps you to set the mood. And just because you’re role-playing doesn’t mean you have to have a script memorized. It can all be done nonverbally, for the most part. For example, dress up as a police officer and approach your partner in an authoritative manner. Lift them up by their shirt if they are sitting and proceed to frisk them in a sexual manner; allowing your hands to linger over delicate areas longer than usual. At that point, you can add a line or two about how they are under suspicion of having contraband or something of that variety. In reality, you may not have to say anything since the costume and your previous action is an indication of how things may progress. In this scenario, the act of frisking your partner in a sexual manner should be enough to get them excited about the events that are to unfold.

The cost of costumes and props is a concern for many too. Not everyone can afford to pay (or want to pay) for all of the extra things that can be involved in this type of play. That can easily be remedied by simply using what is available around the house and by raiding your closet. A teacher and student scene is one example that doesn’t require a costume or the purchase of extra props. Neither person needs to have something particular to play either part. The person playing the teacher could wear something as simple as a button down shirt and khakis or a simple dress or skirt; which can be found in most of our wardrobes. You could do a costume for the student, but really anything would work. As for props in this scene, a ruler or thick book could be used as an instrument for spanking (if that is what you are interested in). Most of us have either of those items around the house. Or just skip the props and go for the “I’ll do whatever you want to pass this class” approach. You are only limited by your own imagination.

By the way, don’t forget to check out the after Halloween sales at your local retail stores if you are interested in investing in some stuff. Most retail stores want those Halloween items gone as soon as possible to make room for the other holiday items. Typically, they will mark the prices down lower and sooner on Halloween things, than other holidays.

Dressing up and role playing is going to be whatever you make of it. It can be very simple or very elaborate. Ultimately, the goal is to add a little extra excitement and break away from the typical sexual routine. Just remember to relax and go with the flow. You’re not putting on a Broadway performance, so don’t put so much pressure on yourself to act out an award-winning scene. Don’t worry if it doesn’t go exactly how you pictured it to in your head. If you achieved the desired end result from it, then it is a success. Even if the first scenario you try doesn’t do it for you, don’t stop after that one. Try out others before giving up.
